Healthy Eating: Healthy Eating Tips For 3 Types Of Travelers (Yahoo Shine)

I often only eats snacks when I travel no matter the distance. I don't like inconveniencing nature's call while on a journey. I'm sure some people share same sentiments. This healthy eating tips is very useful for three types of travelers.

In planes, trains, or your own car, you're constantly on the move. These insider tips from nutritionists and trainers help you stay in tip-top shape, no matter the workplace conditions. By Crystal Meers

1. THE COMMUTER
You're a nine-to-fiver who wishes you could swap your to-and-from-work trek for the treadmill.

SMART FOOD: Having healthy snacks handy is the best way to avoid falling into the vending-machine trap or the receptionist's candy dish. Nutritionist Kimberly Snyder, author of The Beauty Detox Solution, recommends travel-friendly fresh fruit like bananas and oranges, along with walnuts, raw almonds, sunflower seeds, and pumpkin seeds. "And dates," she adds, "for sweet cravings." Swap the soda in the break-room fridge for cold-pressed organic fruit and vegetable juices. Los Angeles-based Pressed Juicery, a favorite of Nicole Richie and Zooey Deschanel, ships seven different kits-including Greens, Detox, and Celebration-with 12 drinks in each, nationwide.

NO-EXCUSES EXERCISE: Joining a gym near your office could offer a double stress-buster: Instead of sitting in bumper-to-bumper traffic, leave home earlier or head home later and hit the gym during rush hour-before or after work. If you're a train commuter, traveling off-peak could even save you a few bucks in fare.

BE PREPARED: Cut down your a.m. crunch time by prepping the day's food the night before. "Make a huge kale salad for dinner and bring the rest to work for lunch," says Snyder. "It's such a hardy green that it won't be soggy the next day." And you won't be tempted when your cubemate offers to make a burger run at lunch.

2. THE FREQUENT FLIER
You've got a concierge in every port and plastic baggies full of 3-ounce shampoo bottles under your sink.

SMART FOOD: Forget packing your lunch-there's barely enough time to pack your suitcase before a flight. Two new meal-replacement bars, Elemental Superfood Seedbars and Raw Revolution, get the stash-worthy stamp of approval from Los Angeles-based nutritionist Elissa Goodman. "They are both raw, so they are easy to digest, while still supplying a balance of protein, carbs, and good fats," explains Goodman. In other words, just what you need to keep your mind off the nachos in Terminal 3.

NO-EXCUSES EXERCISE: Bring your sneakers and download RunKeeper, a favorite of Tracy Benham, exercise physiologist and author of The Best Book on How to Travel Fit. "The app monitors my time and pace while my iPod plays. It uses the GPS to track my course and calories burned, and then stores the information." More than just for running, it can be used for cycling, skiing, swimming, and other activities. Need help finding your way? Try mapmyrun.com, which allows users to share training routes.

MASTER THE MINIBAR: Your late check-in means room service closed hours ago. Heed Snyder's advice before ravaging the minibar: "Even if they aren't ideal items, stick to what was once a vegetable or a nut in some form, like roasted nuts and potato chips. Avoid refined-flour snacks like crackers and pretzels, and candy loaded with artificial dyes, sugary juices, and sodas. Your skin will thank you."

3. THE LONG HAULER
Being off-site and away from home for weeks at a time doesn't mean your health has to go off the rails.

SMART FOOD: When your brain is working overtime, your body is, too. Supplement with vitamins, probiotics, and enzymes to give your system the support it needs to keep up. "Type A personalities aren't relaxing and enjoying their food," explains Goodman. "They are eating really fast, which wreaks havoc on digestion." She recommends a daily probiotic such as Dr. Ohhira or Culturelle, along with raw enzymes and a multivitamin, both available in age-group-specific women's formulas from Garden of Life.

NO-EXCUSES EXERCISE: When you tire of staring at yourself on your hotel gym elliptical, sign up for fitist.com. Purchase a package on the site and gain access to classes at any of their handpicked network of boutique fitness studios, and to services provided by vetted spas, massage therapists, and health and wellness experts. Currently available in New York City and Los Angeles, service expansion into additional cities is underway.

GO LOW-CARB: Lunch meetings, cocktail parties, and business dinners leave little room for menu negotiation, but navigating the plate is easy according to personal trainer Patrick Murphy: "Eat smaller portions with less dense carbohydrates, and always say, 'light on the oil'-that can save you hundreds of calories." Murphy also recommends going for the protein on your plate first. "Save your carbohydrates for the end of the meal, when you've already slowed the absorption process down, and you'll avoid a spiking blood-sugar level, which leads to fat gains."

Its such a very sad and unfortunate incident. Poor little children, leaders of tomorrow gone just like that. I can't imagine what the parents of these unfortunate kids are going through right now. May their souls rest in peace. Also the conditions that led to this horrible incident should be checked.

According to Guardian UK:
Doctors have been fighting to save a group of primary school children poisoned by their school lunch at a primary school in a poor rural area of eastern India yesterday.

Reports vary as to the number of those who have died but officials on Wednesday put the toll at 22, with another 25 in hospital, as well as the school cook. Three of the children were in serious condition, Associated Press reported.

The children, between the ages of five and 12, fell ill after eating the lunch, of rice and lentils, at the village of Chapra, in the poverty-stricken state of Bihar, on Tuesday. The meal is believed to have been contaminated with pesticides.

"We are trying hard to save the children admitted [here] but the condition of some of them remains critical," said Dr Amarkant Jha Amar, superintendent of the Patna Medical College and Hospital.

Angry parents disinterred the hastily buried bodies of some of the victims and displayed them outside the school in protest. Demonstrators pelted a police station with stones, set ablaze buses and chanted slogans denouncing the state government.

India's free school meals programme is one of the biggest such schemes anywhere in the world, covering more than 100 million children. Prices of meat, fruit or fresh vegetables have soared in recent years, leaving parents in poorer families reliant on school lunches to ensure adequate levels of nutrition. But the scheme is plagued by waste and corruption, and incidents of poisoning are common - though they are rarely this serious.

Early tests showed that the food at the school may have been contaminated with pesticides used on rice and wheat crops in the area. Staff stopped serving the meal after children began vomiting.

A senior government health official in Delhi said one possibility was that ingredients had been stored too close to dangerous chemicals. "Washing before cooking would have made no difference," he told the Guardian.

Parents in Chapra first took their children to the rudimentary local health centre before they were transferred to local hospitals. Even in major metropolises India has no functioning ambulance service; in rural areas cars, rickshaws or even carts are used to carry the ill or injured.

Sweetners Reduce Health Benefits Of Milk
As a kid I loved sweetened milk more than anything. I hardly take pap, but once you prepare my pap with peak condensed sweetened milk, I’m drinking that pap with glee. Little did I know I wasn’t drinking a healthy milk. Sweetners reduce the health benefits of milk I don't do that anymore though.

According to The Inquisitr;
Milk is touted as an excellent source of calcium, vitamin D, and other essential nutrients. The USDA recommends children and adults alike drink two to three cups of milk a day or at the very least to supplement with other dairy products like yogurt and cheese in order to attain the health benefit.

However, milk, both regular and chocolate, may not be doing a body good, especially if you are drinking down a cold tall glass of added sweeteners. The sugars used to enhance the flavor of most low-fat store-shelf dairy products can negate the health benefits, according to Harvard pediatrician David Ludwig.

Ludwig is the director of the New Balance Foundation Obesity Prevention Center at Boston Children’s Hospital.

“Americans are consuming billions of gallons of milk a year, presumably under the assumption that their bones would crumble without them,” Ludwig wrote in an article published in the medical journal JAMA Pediatrics. On average, the US dairy industry produces 20 billion gallons of milk annually.

Nigeria imports $1million worth of milk daily!

Drinking reduced fat milk has been recommended as a way to meet dairy intake guidelines and avoid saturated fat. But when the fat is reduced in milk or yogurt products, it’s often replaced with sweeteners, which makes it taste better but also adds sugar and calories, reports TODAY.

“The worst possible situation is reduced-fat chocolate milk: you take out the fat, it’s less tasty,” Ludwig says. “So to get kids to drink 3 cups a day, you get this sugar-sweetened beverage.”

One cup of low-fat chocolate milk is 158 calories, with 68 calories coming from solid fats and added sugars. One cup of unflavored, reduced-fat 2 percent milk is 122 calories, with 37 calories from solid fats and added sugars.

Several other studies have addressed the use and impact of sugar, high fructose corn syrup, and artificial sweeteners on one’s health – finding them addictive and causal to metabolism related diseases and disorders.

People are better off eating other calcium-rich or calcium-fortified foods as a healthier substitute in lieu of drinking sweetener-laced milk. These foods are easier to find with a growing number of adults becoming lactose intolerant.

Please when you go to Chinese restaurant, don't just nice sounding meals on the menu they may taste so good to you, speaking from experience. Ask what you are ordering first. What I want to share with you today reminds of what happened a few years back. We went to a Chinese Restaurant called Saipan. It was a little get-together for the office. So the order for food was made mostly by the ogas but we individually chose our drinks/poisons. When the food was served, most of us can't wait to taste this exquisite exotic oriental dishes. We don't care if they were healthy Chinese food or not.

There was this thing that looked fried shrimps. I scooped more than enough of the shrimp-like looking dish to my plate. More people did what I did. I took one spoonful and I was screaming uncontrollably in my mind for the fire service to put out the fire raging in my mouth. This stuff crazy hot chili pepper. I tried to hide my predicament from public display lol. I don't know when I emptied my glass of red label. I sat back and watched everybody who scooped that fried chili and they all learnt their lesson the hard way just like I did.

Moral of the Story: Always be sure of the cockroaches and frogs you are order at a Chinese restaurant!

My boss shared his food with me today Thursday June 13 2013 afternoon. One look at the content in a deep white bowl convinced me it was moi-moi. I cut and tossed a sizeable portion in my mouth, bad mistake. I remembered the warning in our chemistry laboratory back in Government College Umuahia which says; “DON’T Sniff, Touch Or Taste Anything” I used to taste out the chemicals on people’s notebook especially when their eyes are elsewhere lol! My taste buds recoiled sharply to safety, I spat the portion out at a dizzying speed. What the hell was that? What kinda moi-moi is this?

I had to ask my boss, bros no vex o what kinda food be this? He said it’s wheat and added it’s healthy. That was when I noticed the other plate with soup. The wheat is the swallow (like garri) for the soup. I have never eaten wheat as swallow before. I’m not the adventurous type with food. I’m finicky with food. The soup was ogbono or draw soup. How worse can it get? I hardly eat ogbono soup. I’m going against these unfriendly food tag team. My grumbling stomach decreed I eat the wheat and ogbono soup plus I wanted to taste the wheat. I just shoved the bolus down my oesophagus. It didn’t look like eating, it was like punishment. I finished my meal with a huge soup left over while MD almost licked his plate clean. He loves ogbono/draw soup.

One man's corned beef is another man's cyanide. That's my version of one man's meat is another man's poison.

Don't Be Adventurous In A Chinese Restaurant, Know What You Are Eating!
